Oh, My Heart

Hailing from Berks County Pennsylvania, Shannen Moser grew up steeped in folk and country music. Influenced by the historically rich area, stretching farmland, and local folkers, Shannen credits the area with giving her the tools to write the music she does today. Her self-taught guitar plucking style and confessional lyricism are evocative of the area she grew up in. She vividly recalls her first encounter with folk music in her dad’s old truck, playing “Be here in the Morning” by Townes Van Zandt. Since then her love for songwriting has continued to grow.

In 2014 Shannen moved to Philadelphia to pursue her music more earnestly. Her latest recording, the debut LP “Oh My Heart” was released in January this year and has taken her from small bedroom recordings to a more expansive sound. Mostly recorded in a barn in Earlville, New York by Eric Muth, the record moves forward sonically while preserving the sincerity of her earlier work and showcasing Moser’s folk and country influences. The record was later finished in Philadelphia at the Knife Lair, a new studio project headed by Eric Muth and Wyatt Oberholzer. Accompanied by cello from Julia Peters, keys by Joe Evers, and guitar and auxiliary by Muth, Shannen’s band has helped her solo acoustic project evolve into a fuller sounding project. “Oh My Heart” moves beyond the sketchbooks of Shannen’s earlier work and proves an arrival for both her and her band.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0634/4087/9867/products/v600_Oh__My_Heart_efaf94dd-359a-4c67-8e41-8cbfab187d48.jpg?v=1652468187
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0634/4087/9867/products/v600_Walter_Etc._Gloom_Cruise_f976dca8-3131-459b-9cb4-cbf4a9a64281.jpg?v=1655990180
598497
Golden Apples - Dumbness

Cherry (now known as Golden Apples) is the new bedroom-pop project from Russell Edling, the ex-singer and songwriter of Kite Party. The record borrows its title from Koch’s personal poetry theme book: Safe Sins is a place of safety, acceptance, and progress. It is a record about isolation, loss, and dismantling shame and grief through self-analysis.

Koch, formerly of beloved Philly trio Cayetana, has been working on the 10 songs that comprise Safe Sins for years. They existed first as poems before being brought to life at The Bunk in Henryville, Pennsylvania, where Koch (guitar, vocals) recorded with bandmates Matt Schimelfenig (guitar, bass, keyboard, vocals), Ian Farmer (bass), and Pat Conaboy (drums). Schimelfenig also produced and mixed the record.

Koch explains that while Safe Sins tracks a narrative arc, it’s not exactly linear—it’s complex and tangled, treading a more realistic path to healing. “To me, it has this vibe of the stages that you go through when you’re grieving, but also how most people don’t go through one stage then onto the next one,” she says. “They have it over and over. Even in one day, you could experience all of those things and come up with some type of closure, then the next day feel differently. There’s not really ever a clean conclusion.”

The record’s opener gives way to a rush of guitars and both digital and analog drums on the spritely “When You Leave The Sun,” a strut in crisp morning sunlight: “On the bright days, I can see the light/When the chemicals blend just right,” Koch calls brightly. It’s followed by lead single “A Pace Far Different,” a guitar-forward bop haunted by chiming keys and pleas for escape. Scattered throughout, between wiry guitar melodies, drum triggers, and cavernous synth patches, are small, insistent mantras: “We give ‘em credit, we don’t owe ‘em that much,” on “Even At Your Easel,” or the soothing nihilism of “Cosmic Joke,” as Koch declares, “Everything I lost, I never really had.”

The record builds to a close with “Parlor” and “Choose,” the first of which opens with light organ and drums, and finds Koch inventorying then stitching up the damage done by putting herself behind others: “I’ll gift myself my own respect/Maybe someday time will intercept, and I’ll be able to grant my own success/To be happy.” It’s followed by the clean-slate of “Choose,” which reframes power and self-determination over a slow-march of guitars. “Now I live in absence of or inside my least desirable traits/I pick and choose,” Koch sings before resolving, “I could wield this magic for good/Make it right, I know I could/If I choose.”

Safe Sins is defined equally by pain and hope, two opposing forces that define human existence. The backdrop for this insularity is an expanse of wide blue skies, seas of trees, and winding roads, ideal locales for thoughts to blossom into greater reflections of the outer world. The slow-burning “Absurdity,” which Benton modestly says is about “hiking and standing in the country,” uses the sublimity of the wilderness to comment on technology’s inescapable presence. Similarly, the driving opener “Rock & Roll” transforms the premise of a “simple song about being a rocker” into a stream-of-consciousness, apocalyptic poem about delusions, regrets, and getting lost in your own limited perspective. Yet despite having been cut off from touring just after the release of Lost in the Country, Benton found a way to explore his world from home, crafting a new collection of songs that shared a sense of movement that he could only attribute to his time spent out on the road. “I was on the road in my mind,” he explains, “thinking back on my life as a musician — my successes, my failures — and I was reflecting on the ever-ongoing process of moving on that my life has been made up of”.

The result is a natural progression onward from Trace Mountains’ previous work, a look in the rearview that examines how things change and what that feels like. “I just started writing songs about that feeling we all have, of suddenly waking up to a brief moment of clear-headedness, like ‘Oh wow, HOW did we get here?’” he laughs. “I started thinking about that a lot and just approached the feeling from different points of view and different voices that felt relatable to me. A lot of that led back to images of the road.” Largely conveyed through the lens of the traveler, these visions of the road appear all throughout HOUSE OF CONFUSION — a friend smoking his pipe peering out on the open horizon, a winding backwoods stretch in the dead of night, or a view of the moon hanging low in the sky on a clear afternoon. Benton conjures scenes both real and imagined, blending past, present, and an abstract future together in pursuit of a revelation that feels just out of reach. The album's overarching themes of friendship, love and the open road are wound carefully into every song, each one revealing a different stretch of the same road, with no true end in sight.

Benton says that taking HOUSE OF CONFUSION into the studio with his collaborators was easy and the band's shared experience on the road deepened the group's contributions to the material. "My band is essential and always has been,” he explains. “While I have been known to write the words and the bones of the songs, they really bring it to life and make it sing." The players on the album remain essential to Benton’s vision for the music, with much of the magic emanating from the warmth of collaboration with close friends. This time around, he is joined by mainstay players Jim Hill (guitar, keys), Greg Rutkin (drums) and Susannah Cutler (voice, mellotron) - as well as new additions, Bernard Casserly (bass), J.R. Bohannon (pedal steel, guitar), David Grimaldi (guitar - tracks 4 & 5), and Ryan Jewell (drums, marimba - track 4). The result of this new combination of players is a band that is effortlessly cohesive, loosely gliding through performances that could at any moment fall apart. Moving even further away from the bedroom-recording style of the band’s first proper album, 2018’s A Partner to Lean On, the songs and arrangements on HOUSE OF CONFUSION tip ever-more into the rootsier impulses of Lost in the Country, relying heavily on live recording & instrumentation that features the acoustic guitar and pedal steel. This shift reveals a new, understated complexity within the songs and the tangible, tactile nature of the performances evokes the free-flowing nature of influences like Tom Petty or Built to Spill, imbued throughout with the energy of country icon Emmylou Harris’ cult classic and band favorite, Wrecking Ball.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0634/4087/9867/products/v600_Trace_Mountains_House_Of_Confusion_Art_4e893bab-2bef-4652-ab13-430bd45fda59.jpg?v=1652468327
